How psychopaths are dominating the job world

How gefhrlicher irrers are dominating the job worldHow psychopaths are dominating the job worldMadness is commonly understood to be a frequent bedfellow of creative genius but what about business acumen?A recent study performed by Board and Fritzon at the University of Surrey in England found various personality disorders to be much more prevalent among high-level executives than the mentally ill criminals that inhabit Broadmoor. The idea that narcissists, sufferers of histrionic disorder and anankastic disorder are likely zipping past you on the career food chain isnt a novel one but studies begin to suggest more and more cases to be observed. This might be jarring when first read, but further analysis unmasks its reason.Successful and unsuccessful psychopathsThe study goes on to illustrate a fascinating distinction between the two types of psychopaths unsuccessful psychopaths lack either the faculty or the mettle to capitalize on the idiosyncratic way they view the world, while succ essful psychopaths let their psychosis take free rein. To reiterate this more sinisterly Those biologically incapable of considering others in an emotional sense are at an absolute advantage in the job market. In chorus with this is the demarcation of impulses vs. the question of severity. Is it that psychopaths who earn a distributionspolitik in the upper echelons of society are simply beset by a milder version of the same illnesses that plague the ones consumedby failure? Or, is it because what successful psychopaths lack in empathy, they make up for in restraint? The latter presumes theyre able to shackle instincts of self-destructionand pivot with unbridled grandiosity while the former sort of undermines the correlation altogether. It should be noted that the majority of studies on the subject have two ways of defining success Personal (wealth social status etc.) and simply avoiding imprisonment orinstitutionalization.Successful psychopaths in the workplaceAmbition, drive, and res ourcefulness are the apparent offspring of tunnel vision and a genius for manipulation. Ladders previously reported onthe careers that attract the most psychopathsand the list is very much in harmony with Board and Fritzons findings. The top five jobs adored by the wonky are all jobs considered by most to be high-paying ones surgeons, sales reps, media personalities, lawyers, and CEOs, respectively.A study published by the association for psychological science found that three out four clinal psychology professors described either a current or past colleague as a psychopath.Successful psychopaths were found to test higher in areas of excitement seeking, assertiveness, executive function, and self-discipline. They were also found to be callous, guiltless and lacking empathy. They channel all of these paradoxical qualities in ways that belie the impression of social normalcy,The danger of the findingsWe promote them, we elect them, and sometimes, a lot of people feel comfortable when p eople like that are in charge of our lives,Dr. Igor Galynkertold CNBC two years ago.Its important to examine the continuum of the effects of psychopathy when evaluating these studies. Reliable data cant exclusively be obtained from just the diagnosis itself because the symptoms tend to manifest in a myriad of ways.Robert D. Hare pulls from 25 years of research to paint an imperatively disturbing portrait of mental deformity in his 1999 book Without Conscience The Disturbing World Of Psychopaths Among Us.In the book, Hares admission of the ruthless and magnetic charm that lives inside true psychopaths is habitually met with all the ways it deems them dangerous to our society. His definition is pretty clearRobert Hares definition of a psychopath is also a rubric to success Social predators who charm, manipulate and ruthlessly plow their way through life Completely lacking in conscience and feeling for others, they selfishly take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without the slightest sense of guiltor regret.Ultimately we are talking about illness here, the destruction of which has been greatly hindered by our own obsession and lionization of it. What worries me most about studies that magnify the link between success and sickness, is it adding further credence to the romanization of mental illness. Its bad enough that aspiring writers ache for a drip of the madness that led Woolf to the river Ouse, now we have to worry about young professionals attempting to adopt maladaptive qualities in a bid to inch their progress that much further along. The research is blameless, but I must caution those and their appraisal of it.

Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way!

Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way Youve been unhappy for some time in your present position. It could be due to conflicts with your manager or coworkers, to lack of advancement opportunities, to salary concerns, or to any number of other issues. Youve considered all of your options, have weighed the pros and cons involved with each, and have even considered the impact on your personal and family lives. You have finally reached a decision that the best course of action is to leave your current position for another opportunity. So, how do you now proceed to communicateyour decision toyour current organization? This seems like itshould be the least of your worries after what youve just been through. However, the way you quit is a critical decision, one that can either strengthen your professional reputation and future opportunities or totally decimate them. The days of the two-week notice are a thing of the past in the fast-pacedworld that we liv e in, and not recognizing this could be to your detriment. Its important when negotiating a start date for your new position to consider the time youll need for your announcement to your current employer. How muchtime you need will depend on a number of factors, including (among others)- whether you are an individual contributor or manager- whether you are in a highly specialized position that is difficult to fill- and whether your current project is at a stage that would be difficult to recover from your loss. The following are several steps that you should consider when its time to quit, governed by your particular situationPrior Action Know What Your Departure Entails Through HRAre there any impediments to your departure, including documents that you may have signed when you first joined your current company? You should have answered this question prior to accepting another position. Can you not participate in the same type of activity with other competitors for a certain period o f time? Are there restrictions on taking your current clients with you to your new assignment? What benefits are you entitled to receive upon termination (e.g., pay for remaining vacation, earned overtime hours, unused sick leave)? When does your health coverage end (end of the month or at termination)? Is COBRA or other health plan coverage an option in the interim?Action 1 Inform Your Immediate Manager(s)This sounds rather simple, but in complex corporate organizations, you may report to two or more individuals (e.g., functional and direct-line),or you may be a project manager involved directly with managers of multiple groups.Plan to carry out this actionin person if at all possible. If you work remotely, do it via a scheduled telephone and/or video conference. In all cases, follow these notifications up with a formal letter to your management and HR indicating your planned termination date and your willingness to assist in the process of identifying a replacement and effectively transferring your knowledge and information to your assigned replacement.Action 2 Inform Your Direct Reports/SubordinatesDont waste time after you make your formal management announcements to inform your direct reports and/or subordinates. They need to hear the news directly from you in a group setting (if possible). This should be done the same day as you inform your management. Be prepared to answer your subordinatesquestions openly and honestly. Ease their concerns about your departure and let them know that you will support them and their interests however you can.Action 3 Inform Other Colleagues and CustomersThis is a little trickier. For company colleagues, you should look for the earliest opportunity to inform them after action No. 2is completed. For example, if they mention in a meeting that you have an upcoming action that is scheduled after your departure date, mention that you will assure your replacement will be up to speed, and then discuss your departure plans. Not tel ling your colleagues and thinking that they will somehow get the yep from office gossip leaves them feeling that they were not important enough to you to inform them personally. On the other hand, going to them directly and making a point to tell them can seem like youre rather pretentious and believe your departure should be very important to them.Regarding informing your customers, you will need to clear your actions with your management and with HR (and possibly with your legal department) in advance.Proper communication of your departure plans not only displays professionalism and respect for your company and your colleagues, but it also paves the way for future business recommendations and opportunities. Do all that you can to support your current company, and your new company will recognize your efforts and see that it isgetting a winner. The global misery index has reached its highest levels in years

The global misery index has reached its highest levels in yearsThe global misery index has reached its highest levels in yearsIf you have been feeling down lately, recognize that it is not just you that is feeling sad, but also the world. According to a new study by Gallup that surveyed the emotions of 154,000 people in mora than 145 countries, our Negative Experiences datenbankindex - an average of peoples reported physical pain, sadness, and anger, worry, stress - is the highest it has been since 2006.The world is feeling downWhats making us blue? The study does not go into the reasons behind the rising tide of negative emotions but suggests that worldwide turmoil could account for it. In the United States, in particular, stress is what is on many Americans minds. They were the second-most likely to say they had experience stress the previous day with 49% of the population reporting it, a number that only ranks above the most stressed country Greece.Positive emotions are also on t he decline. Less than half of people worldwide - 46% - said did something interesting or learned something new in 2017, a number that is lower than it was in the past few years. For Americans, this rise in negative emotions could be due to the rise in anxiety since 2017. A recent American Psychiatric Association poll suggests that economic and political anxiety could be at the root of the downturn in emotions.Americans said they were more anxious today than they were at the same time last year, citing worries about keeping themselves safe, keeping their families safe, bills, and the impact of politics on their life as answers. To float on top of a sea of bad emotions without getting pulled under, you need to honor your negative emotions as valid without wallowing in them. And then you need to celebrate your positive emotions without discounting them. Our brains can get easily trained to focus on mistakes and bad experiences, overlooking the positive. To retrain ourselves, try a pra ctice of gratitude and list out tiny and big moments that made you feel good. That way, you teach yourself to notice the interesting world around you and can go to bed each night on a high note.

Ways to Reduce Employee Turnover - Spark Hire

Ways to Reduce Employee Turnover - Spark HireIts blatantly clear that the job fruchtfleischet of today is very different than the job market of years past. In the past, it was normal for an employee to stay with the same company their entire career. They would abflug from the bottom and over the years gradually work their way up the ladder. It wasnt uncommon to hear that there were employees that had been with a company for 20 years or mora. Today, its much more common to see job hoppers running around the market and within their industry searching for the company that fits them best. The jury is still out on whether or not its a good idea to hire a job hopper though. Either way, employees come and go, but if your company resembles a revolving door with new talent replacing those that left once a month, then you are doing something wrong. Employee retention is important and if turnover in your company is high its going to leave a bad mark on your companys name. Take a look at some of these ways you can reduce employee turnover and start increasing your companys retention rate.If youve picked up on anything from Spark Hire and our blogs its that hiring employees is expensive. In fact, the Wall Street Journal asserts that it costs almost twice as much as an employees salary to find and train a replacement. This is a strong assertion, but if you think about it its not that far-fetched. When you lose an employee you not only have to hire someone to take their place, but think of all the loss in productivity that takes place while you search. This role is important, otherwise you wouldnt be trying to fill it again. Therefore all of the work that goes along with that role is stacking up quickly since there is no one there to do it. Then you have to take time out of your schedule and work to hire another employee. When you think of all of these things, its easy to see how expensive a high employee turnover rate can be.So what can you do about it?Better HiringFor start ers, if you have employees coming in and out every month youre probably not doing the best hiring. Sure, its easy to find someone that will fill the role immediately so they can get started on all of the backed-up work, but they may not work for the long-haul. That is why you really have to put your best foot forward in your hiring. But Im swamped at work each day and dont have adequate time to invest in better hiring, you say? Well thankfully thats the problem Spark Hire aims to solve. When you utilize video interviews and video technology into your hiring process, you save time and, in turn, money. In fact, you can conduct 10 video screens in the same amount of time it would take you to conduct one phone screen. On average, a phone screen takes about 30 minutes. Thats a lot of time invested for a candidate youre not even sure you are interested in. Start utilizing video interviews and Spark Hire into your hiring process and start hiring smarter.Know What You WantKnowing what you wa nt out of this future employee is key for finding the right person. Sit down and assess the position you are trying to fill. What specific skills are needed for this position. Where did past employees in this position go wrong? Why did those in this position before leave? Were your expectations too high for their skill set? Make a list of what skills are imperative, what skills are great to have and what skills would be an added bonus. List these skills in the job description and make sure the people you hire actually have these skills.Look At Your Managing StyleLike the previous tip, ask yourself why these employees keep leaving? Its easy to say, Oh, its just the nature of the position. Its a boring job, or its clearly too difficult of a position. No. There is someone out there qualified to fill almost any position. It may be the position, but it also may not be the position itself at all. It may be your managing style and how you interact with those that have been in this position . Are your expectations too high? Do you lack flexibility? Is this a positive environment to work in? Do you appreciate your employees? These are all questions you must ask yourself before you keep the vicious cycle rolling.CompensationIs the salary or compensation you have set for this position on par with the average compensation in the industry? If you are not willing to pay your employees adequate compensation for their work, then of course they are going to leave your company- and they wont look back either. Another company out there will be willing to pay them what they are worth and you will keep losing employees. Make sure you know what the trends are in the market and are compensating your employees adequately.Just because we still find ourselves in the midst of recession recovery doesnt mean that employees will stay at their job no matter what. In fact, according to survey results those working in the job market are becoming more confident and are more apt to leave their p ositions if they are unhappy. You may have been able to get away with a lot before since employees figured they wouldnt be able to find another job, but as the market slowly picks itself up your employees will definitely leave.Company CultureYou need to make sure you are hiring the right kind of people for your company specifically. Most companies have a certain culture. It may have developed naturally or you may have made the effort to instill a certain vibe in your office. Either way, if you arent hiring people that mesh well with the employees that already work there then it will be much easier for them to want to leave and ditch your company. Take a look at our past article on how to interview candidates for fit. Taking heed of those tips will certainly help to reduce employee turnover.Conduct Exit Interviews If your company or department has a high turnover rate, then you should definitely be conducting exit interviews. Ask the employees that are leaving why they werent happy w orking for your company. Some will say they were offered a better position and others will actually tell you the truth. Doing this may give you at least some insight as to why you are losing employees left and right.Following these tips can really help to reduce employee turnover at your company. The loss of productivity and money is too high to ignore the issue. You need to take action now before your company or department loses more employees- and more money.

Finding Jobs for Former Police Officers

Finding Jobs for Former Police OfficersFinding Jobs for Former Police OfficersThere are plenty of reasons to be a versicherungsassekuranzbrief officer, both tangible and intangible. Just like any other career, though, the time may come when an officer decides to move on. Whether they spend a year or a lifetime working as a police officer, finding a new job or a new career can be challenging. To overcome these difficulties, officers should take a moment to reflect on how you can find a job after working in law enforcement. Jobs After Law Enforcement Opportunities to Use Your Unique Skills Before contemplatinga new career, former officers should take an inventory of the skills theyve acquired during their law enforcement careers. Look for areas that will translate well into civilian careers. Theres a relatively pervasive perception that law enforcement officers utilize knowledge, skills, and abilities that are unique to the profession. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think about the job functions of police officers They make arrests, resolve disputes, identify hazards and potential problems and often seek to head them off before they get worse. They write reports, maintain records and files, adhere to a chain of command. All of these functions and more require the application of skills that are vital and valuable in the private sector Sales All too often, police officers underestimate their sales skills. Think about it, though. Officers sell things no one wants handcuffs, court dates and traffictickets. Even in the toughest precinct, officers dont get into altercations every day. Yet more than likely, they issue tickets or make arrests just about every shift. Law enforcement officers have a vested interest in peacefully accomplishing these tasks. They have personal reasons, such as wishing to avoid complaints they have safety reasons, desiring to avoid getting hurt or having to hurt someone else and they have professional reasons, as they recogni ze the importance of community-oriented policing and of fostering trust and respect among the citizens they serve. All of these create incentives for officers to hone their sales skill very quickly, and most become very effective at it. How many sales people do you know who can issue someone a $300 speeding ticket, just to have the recipient say thank you after the stop? Interpersonal Communication Similar to sales skills, officers must learn very quickly how to communicate with a whole range of individuals in reservierung to be effective at their jobs. They develop vital interpersonal communication skills, including sympathy, empathy, and the art of listening. Most importantly, they learn how to communicate with people in a variety of ways and in a variety of situations. Leadership Certainly, police officers are accustomed to people doing what they tell them. Leadership, however, has far less to do with barking commands and far more to do with learning how to effectively in fluence other peoples behavior. All officers, regardless of rank or responsibility, learn valuable leadership skills early in their careers. The concept is ingrained into them beginning with the first day at the academy, and it permeates throughout their entire careers. Problem Solving Few people are able to work out problems better than law enforcement officers. Due to the independent work environment, officers are often forced to get creative in solving all sorts of problems, big and small. From working around a vehicle or emergency light malfunction to providing feuding neighbors with ways to help them get along better, officers are masters at coming up with solutions. Critical Thinking For police officers, thinking critically means survival. Law enforcement professionals have to think fast on their feet and make a snap judgment, including some that literally mean life or death either for them or a suspect. As a normal part of their day-to-day job, police must quickly and accurately assess situations and devise tactics for dealing with them. They must also be able to quickly adapt to their environments and to other peoples actions. Identifying issues and developing a workable course of action is an almost hourly occurrence for police officers. Emphasize YourStrengths By focusing on strengths and evaluating critical skills and abilities, officers who are looking to start a new career can better market themselves to private employers. The most important key is to realize that what they do, day in and day, out actually does translate into valuable and marketable job skills in almost any field. In order to overcome the perception that law enforcement skills are unique to the profession, officers who are trying to make a career change must learn to articulate exactly how their skills are a good match for potential employers. Looking Forward to Life After Law Enforcement Just as there are many and more reasons to be a police officer, there are als o many reasons one may tire of law enforcement. In order to make a successful transition, officers should accentuate their positive traits and make it known that they are exactly the people employers are looking for.

To add to this fresh overhaul, AOL recently invested in a major redesign of its California HQ, giving it one of the coolest office spaces. The new location reduced standard, bland cubicle formulas and replaced them with new, inspired ideas. The open spaces, bright colors and removal of most walls helps team members focus on collaboration. They literally broke down the walls blocking communication. The design includes large kitchens, relaxation areas, pool tables, games rooms and state-of-the-art work spaces. Facebook Palo Alto, California Like Google, Facebook rode into town on its giant steed and conquered social media. The once college-orientated social platform now boasts millions of users from across the globe. Experts attribute Facebook's growing connection to international cultures to their vision. Like its less than customary technology solutions, Facebook designed its office space with innovative perfection. Facebook used its own software to conduct polls and asked each team member what they wanted in their office space. The result was a superb work environment with big open spaces, relaxation center, skating and DJ areas. Lego Denmark While relaxation and adult fun has its place in the workforce, Lego is a little more immature. Its team members prefer to play all day. As the designer of one of the most popular and oldest toys in the world, Lego strives to keep the children first in its vision. The company's design revolves around playtime and recreation. The corporation'scoolest office spacesare colorful and airy workspaces designed to encourage interaction and play between teams. The focus on playrooms stimulates the imagination and helps staff create new, exciting plans for box sets. Google, AOL, Facebook, Lego and Selgas spend millions each year to supplement office spaces, upgrade software, update technology and optimize workspace. Why? Working conditions have a direct link to productivity and the bottom line, and these factors help put them on the list of the best workplaces. Yes, these companies care about their team members' well-being, but they care about the company's well-being too. Happy team members leave work each day happy. The next day they return energetic and ready to tackle the company's biggest problems. Next time you're looking for a new job, remember the coolest office spaces. The difference may be boring cubicles or ping pong tournaments. Ready to find your dream job? Hire a TopResume writer today!

4 Earth-Friendly Contributions You Can Make at Work

4 Earth-Friendly Contributions You Can Make at Work 4 Earth-Friendly Contributions You Can Make at Work 4 Earth-Friendly Contributions You Can Make at Work When I'm at home, I take much more care about turning off lights, recycling, consuming less water, etc., than when I'm at work. Why? I dont really knowmaybe because I'm not paying for the energy and water usage at work (just being honest!). But my attitude is changing! I came to the conclusion that since I ask my kids to recycle when theyre at school, I better be fulfilling my end of the bargain at work! And you can bring some more green habitsto work with you, too. Here are a few ways. Do Your Actions Speak Louder Than Words? Recycle, recycle, blah, blah, blah. I know youve heard it a thousand times. But do you do it? It is probably one of the easiest earth-friendly contributions you can make right from your workplace. If your company does not recycle, simply ask them to. Most don't do it because of the hassle of disposing it, but there are special recycling dumpsters you can have placed right in your parking lot, with monthly pick ups for as little as $30 a month. (For a company's budget, that's pennies!) Its a small investment that offers a big benefit. If your workplace lacks recycling bins and refuses to add them, put anything you can recycle back in your lunch box and bring it home to your own recycle bin. Its the least you can do and its so easy. A Drop in the Bucket Ditch the bottled water and get a Brita filter. They attach directly to the faucet and the water tastes great! I mean, for goodness sake, didnt most of us grow up on tap water? This will surely help reduce the amount of recycling you have to deal with at work. Americans throw out over 35 billion plastic water bottles every year! Yowza! That means if all 40 of us at had a bottle of water each day, we would contribute more than 10,000 of those billion water bottles in a year. How many would your company add? Go the Extra MileLiterally! Okay, enough with the recycling, right? I will admit openly here that I am by no means a bike rider, but just last week, one of my coworkers rode his bike to work. This is not only beneficial for the environment, but do you know how many calories you can burn on a 13.4 mile bike ride? Double that for a round trip ride. If you dont ride a bike, carpool with a coworker. Not only does this save on gas and tolls, but the conversation is far better than when you're alone! Are You Barking Up the Wrong Tree? This is another example of something I enforced at home, but wasnt doing at work. I denied my kids access to the printer. Give younger kids free reign to a printer and you have 20 pictures of SpongeBob picking his nose to now RECYCLE later that night. What a waste! At work, if you can manage to read that 20 page document on your computer monitor instead of printing it out, do it. I know how tough this isI am a paper person, so I am adjusting slowly. So if you have to print it, make sure to recycle itthere I go again! There are companies like Paper Retriever that will work side-by-side with a school or organization and drop off a paper recycling dumpster in the parking lot of your workplacefor FREE. Once the bin is full with all that paper you were going to throw away, the company comes back to weigh it and haul it away. And you get paid for it! The revenue earned from the paper can be spent on a specific project that the organization chooses.

Leaders, Do You Have a Traffic Problem

Leaders, Do You Have a ’Traffic’ Problem Leaders, Do You Have a ’Traffic’ Problem Recently, I came across a popular unattributed quote floating around online (in a meme, of course). It states,  You are not stuck in traffic, you are traffic. Its a powerful comment on the tendency of people to remove themselves from blame in bad situations â€" and theres a business lesson to pull from this idea, too. Leaders, if something in your organization isnt working â€" whether it be boring meetings or  ineffective communication â€" Ive got some tough news: Youre part of the problem. The good news, however, is you can fix things if you commit to change. As a business coach, I work with businesses to identify these traffic issues, and I help leaders enact change through use of the Rockefeller Habits, a collection of business fundamentals developed by Verne Harnish.  The habits arent just friendly reminders or general guidelines â€" they are the aggregated best practices of the worlds most accomplished organizations. The Rockefeller Habits are effective, but they require real effort from a leader willing to accept responsibility for organizational issues. If you recognize traffic problems at your organization and are willing to accept responsibility, here are two essential steps  to take if you want to eliminate those issues: Step 1: Create Meeting Rhythms Establishing meeting rhythm is a great way to ensure that quick, consistent, and accurate communication keeps flowing from top to bottom (and bottom to top) in your organization. Set up a rhythm of  regularly scheduled, consistent meetings where your team members can discuss items for which they are accountable and that support organizational and individual priorities. In my work, I have found that one of the most essential and effective meetings is the daily huddle. Now, a lot of leaders scoff when I insist that they need  to  add another meeting to their daily schedules, but trust me: This one is vital to organizational success. Set aside a time each morning for your entire team (yes â€" the entire team) to gather for 10-15 minutes. At this meeting, everyone should discuss their daily schedules and any other information the rest of the team should know, progress on key performance indicators, tasks they need help with or are stuck on, and nonnegotiable priorities that need to be accomplished that day. As a leader, make sure to  prep for each huddle with intention and zeal! Gather beforehand a few high-level insights that the entire team needs to know about, and throw in a little something extra from a personal standpoint, such as a recent win or struggle youve experienced. If you demonstrate a willingness to share, others will learn to do the same. The next thing you know, people will actually look forward to the huddle and even depend on it. Another meeting we encourage is a biweekly one-on-one. This is an opportunity for a team member to sit down with a manager to talk openly and honestly about workloads, shifting priorities, struggles at work, and even struggles at home. Aside from giving leaders the inside scoop on team functionality, these meetings provide employees with the opportunity to vent to someone who can take action  on the matter. Otherwise, an employees negativity could spread to others in the office. Step 2: Install Accountability   The second step is to incorporate accountability into these meetings, ensuring that team members are doing the things they have promised to do. Every single team member in your organization should leave these new meetings with action items or next steps towards a goal. If theyre not, the meetings arent being used correctly. (No wonder theyre boring for some of your people!) Furthermore, you should check on tasks assigned in previous meetings to stay updated on their status and next steps. Preparing an agenda of discussion topics for each meeting can help keep meetings on track. Even a rough outline can help reign in conversation and keep people focused on the larger goal at hand. During these meetings, track the conversation on some kind of visible medium, such as a document or a whiteboard. A visual representation of goals, action items, and reminders is a bold and memorable way to keep people organized and on track. â€" The point of smarter meetings is to open up communication and help team members accomplish their goals. When you establish consistent rhythms, those pesky traffic problems will become a thing of the past. Ready to try it in your organization? JT Terrell is a certified Petra Coach.

Where to Find Open Source and Public Domain Software

Where to Find Open Source and Public Domain Software Where to Find Open Source and Public Domain Software Public Domain Software (PDS) refers to software that is not copyrighted and that anyone can use for free without restrictions. Under PDS guidelines and laws governing software development licensing the author(s) create their software with the intention of making it available in the public domain so that others can use their software in whole, in part, or in combination with other software applications without worrying about copyright restrictions. It is important to still bear in mind that public domain software does not necessarily allow a user to access, use, or alter source codes, but in some cases, it may, but it is made available for use whether or not it can be altered. What is Not Included in PDS? PDS does not include product promotions of free software, freeware, or shareware all of which have use restrictions and copyrights. Where to Find Public Domain Software SourceForge offers an extensive directory of software available under a number of licenses including Public Domain, Creative Commons Attribution, OSI-Approved Open Source, and others. Two other great resources to discovering new public domain and open-source software are  Gnu.org  and  CNet. You can also find use-specific, compatible freebies within certain dashboards of other applications.  For example, if you use WordPress, log in and look for new plugins.  Many of these have been created for free use without any restrictions. The same is true with Firefox where you can download from the tens of thousands of available apps and support features including developer tools. Open Source Applications Do Not Fall Under Public Domain The key distinction between Open Source (OS) and public domain software is not whether or not source code is accessible, but if there are any licensing requirements or other restrictions on use, altering the source code, redistribution, or copyrights. If there are, it is Open Source software and not public domain software. Open Source Software Resources The U.S. Department of Defense offers a comprehensive FAQ about Open Source Software (OSS) and use while working with the federal government.  If you are thinking of using OSS or public domain software for official use, please read, FAQs Regarding Open Source Software and the Department of Defense. Open Source Initiative, a 501(c)(3) California-based nonprofit, offers a very detailed (and legal) definition of open source software and how and who can use it.  They also have a great alphabetical listing of companies that offer open source software if you wish to investigate a particular company. The Free Software Foundation offers a comprehensive list of free software. A Few Examples of Open Source Software Applications WordPress - A free, content management and blogging software platform.Firefox  - A web browserLINUX - an open-source operating system based on UNIXApache - a web server software that is now the most commonly used throughout the world.Thunderbird - Developed by Mozilla Foundation (they also are responsible for the web browser, Firefox, Thunderbird offers a platform for email, chat, and email.OpenOfficeKOffice - integrated office suite that includes word processing, spreadsheet, database functions and more, and SquirrelMail - An email handler anyone can use and is often offered (free) by email host company such as Dreamhost. How Can I Tell if Something is Under Public Domain? If there are absolutely no restrictions or copyrights on software applications, it is considered public domain software. Exciting Statistics for Female Computer Programmers - The Tables are Turning In 1944 there were only six female computer programmers, of course, there were not many male programmers either.  However, women have frequently been discouraged from entering into STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) so as computer technology became more widely used, the ratio of male to female computer programmers and software developers remained troubling. However, thanks to White House-driven initiatives, and According to the National Center for Women Information Technology, women now account for 34% of web developers; 23% of programmers; 37% of database administrators; 20% of software developers; and 15% of information security analysts.   (Source: Department of Labor Current Population Survey, 2012)

Survey Almost half of all Americans dont wake up feeling rested

Survey Almost half of all Americans don’t wake up feeling rested Survey Almost half of all Americans don’t wake up feeling rested Is seven hours too much to ask for? That’s how much sleep 89% of Americans say they’d like to get every night, according to a YouGov survey of 1,288 adults. Seven hours of shuteye is also how much the Mayo Clinic recommends. But racing thoughts, mysterious noises, kids, pets, and insomnia intervene, and only 59% get that coveted seven hours most nights.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!As a result, only 40% of people don’t wake up feeling well-rested. (Apparently, it doesn’t matter what position you sleep in if you’re not getting enough sleep).Getting to sleep and staying asleep is a delicate exercise: 51% of respondents said they were light sleepers, and half said they would like to have total silence as they tried to fall asleep. Recommendation: a white-noise machine. Then there are the people and animals in the bed getting in the way of a good night’s sleep: whil e 54% of marrieds said that they each took up their fair share of the bed, which leaves a little under half of couples with a better half hogging the bed. Still, 56% of married people agreed with the statement that they slept better with their partner in bed with them. (A quarter said this about their pets, while 41% disagreed that Fido improved things at night).Side-sleeping was the most popular position, with 59% snoozing in the fetal position. 14% slept on their stomachs. Interestingly, when broken down by generation, almost a quarter (24%) of Millennials slept on their stomachs â€" while only 15% of Gen X and 8% of Boomers did so. In other data, Millennials have admitted to sleeping with their phones, and two-thirds have said they sleep nude, so perhaps this should come as no surprise. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

15 Interview Questions You Should Be Prepared to Answer This Month

15 Interview Questions You Should Be Prepared to Answer This Month 15 Interview Questions You Should Be Prepared to Answer This Month No matter how many you go on, job interviews can always be nerve wrecking. You put on your nicest clothes , print out your resume, and remind yourself to smile real bigâ€"and just when you think everything is going well, the interviewer hits you with a curveball question you aren’t prepared for. Luckily, you’re not going to let that happen again and you’re planning ahead to ace this month’s interview . The best way to for anything is to do your research ahead of timeâ€"which is why we’re here to help. If you’re preparing for a big interview in the New Year, prepping beforehand with these 15 interview questions will help you get one step closer to that dream job. Most interviews start with this question and how you answer it will make your first impression. If you stumble over the answer and aren’t quite sure what to sayâ€"you’re lack of confidence in yourself is showing. If you start listing all your greatest accomplishments and talk too much, your ego might look a little too big. You need to find a good balance between being confident, but not pretentious.   The best way to prepare for this question is to prepare an elevator pitch about who you are. Skip your personal history and give about 2-3 sentences about your career path and how you ended up in this interview, applying for this job.  You don’t need to be too detailed, there are plenty of more questions coming. You just want to leave enough curiosity that the interview becomes excited to learn more about you throughout the interview.   When a hiring manager asks this question, not only do that want to know why you want to work for them, but they also want to know what you know about the company .  This question tests how well you know what the company does and how passionate you are about the work they doâ€"so make sure you know the company well and can speak truthfully about your desires to work there. When asked this during an interview, don’t just say you heard about the job on a website. This is your opportunity to go into more details about why you love this company and what motivates you to want to work there. Moreover, if you have a personal connection at the company, this would be a good time to mention their name! Everyone has something on their resume that they’re really proud of. Whether it’s a skill or achievement you’ve listed, or a specific place you worked at, considering answering this question with the most interesting thing on your resume. Plus, don’t just say something relevant to your most recent positionâ€"you’re already going to be asked about that. Instead, think back to one of the older positions listed on your resume and talk about how that job helped your grow into the person you are today.   This question might seem innocuous, but this is how interviewers weed out the people who are either a) just looking for any job b) were fired from their last position or c) might have a high turnover rate, meaning you won’t be sticking around for too long. Focus on the positives and be specific. Think about why you are looking for a job: did you just graduate and this will be your first real job? Are you switching career paths? Are you leaving a current job for this one? If you are currently working somewhere, you should also be prepared to answer, “why do you want to leave your current job for this one?”   When asked this question, keep in mind that the recruiter is looking to hear what skills you have that you’re going to bring to the team. Don’t give a vague answer, such as, “I’m friendly and a hard worker.” Instead, be specific, summarize your work history and achievements, and use numbers when possible. In example, say how many years of experience you have or name some of the accomplishments you made at your last company. The more specific you can be about what your skills are and how valuable of an employee you are, the better the interviewer will be able to picture you working there. This can seem like a heavy question  during an interview, especially when you haven’t prepared for it ahead of time. Keep in mind that you’re in an interview settingâ€"so you don’t need to go into all the details about what your personal life goals are for the next five years. Focus on your career goals and be realistic.   If you plan to work at this company for five years, make sure you understand who would be working above you and what potential career growth there is. The hiring manager asks this questions to find out if you set realistic goals, if you are ambitious, and to confirm that the position you are interviewing for aligns with these goals and growth. If this position isn’t exactly a job with a lot of future opportunity, you can simply answer this by noting that you are not certain what your future is going to look like, but that you believe this position is going to help you navigate yourself in the right direction. This question is important to ace because it helps an interviewer understand how you deal with conflict. It also helps test how well you think on your feetâ€"so if you prepare ahead of time with a specific example, you’ll avoid the awkward moment of silence while you try to think of an example. Once you have an example in mind, simply explain what happened, how you resolved the issue in a professional manner, and try to end the story with a happy note about how you reached a resolution or compromise with your co-worker. Similar to the “where do you see yourself in five years” question, the interviewer is looking to understand how realistic you are when setting goals, how ambitious you are, and whether or not the job and company will be a good place for you to grow. Again, try to set aside your personal goals (don’t say your dream job is to be paid to take Instagram photos) and focus on your career goals. Think about how this job is going to set you up for the future and get you closer to your dream job. But, don’t be that person who says, “to be CEO of this company.” This question is meant to understand how you work on a team and whether you will be the right cultural fit for the company. To prepare for this answer, make sure you research the company ahead of time. You can always tell a little bit about a what a company’s culture is like by looking through their social media profiles or reading their reviews on Glassdoor. Again, the hiring manager is looking to understand what kind of employee you would be and whether you will be a good fit to add to their team. In some interviews, your future manager might be interviewing you. Answer this question as honest as possible and pull examples from your current manager if you can show how they positively help you work better. Answering this question will help hiring managers identify any potential red flags you might have. You want to show that you can handle stress in a professional and positive manner that helps you continue working or won’t stop you from accomplishing your goals. Moreover, be specific and explain what you actually do to deal with stressâ€"like taking a 15-minute break to take a walk outside, or crossing items off on a to-do list, etc. This question helps a company understand what you will get done in your first month, to three months in the positionâ€"and how you answer it will signal whether or not you’re the right person for the job. Start by mentioning what information you would need to get started and what would help you transition into the new role.  Then focus on your best skills and how you would apply those to this position right away. Some interviewers ask this question, others don’t. It’s always better to be prepared, especially because you want to make sure you would be paid a fair wage for the value you are going to add. That’s why we built our Know Your Worth toolâ€"to help you determine what you should be paid. Note: While employers can ask what your  salary expectations are, in certain places it is illegal for them to ask what your previous salary was. The last question you will always be asked during an interview is whether or not you have any questions for the interviewer. This is your chance to really stand outâ€"so don’t blow it by saying you don’t, or that your questions have already been answered. Even if you don’t have any questionsâ€"there’s always a question you can ask at the end of an interview . Keep a list of at least three to five questions in the back of your mind so that no matter what, there are at least two questions you have to ask at the end of the interview. Recruiters say that actually enjoy getting to answer some questions at the end of an interviewâ€"they did just listen to you talk about themselves, so ask about them for a change. Once this part is over, you can rest easy and walk out of the interview knowing you aced it!

Score! Cool NFL Career Opportunities

Score! Cool NFL Career Opportunities Score! Cool NFL Career Opportunities Score! Cool NFL Career Opportunities Not all jobs in the NFL require running and tackling other players. Playing in the NFL is cool, sure, but very few of us have the athletic chops to make the team. If you're still hoping for a career in the world of football, you may want to look into some of these awesome behind-the-scenes jobs of the National Football League. Every football fan dreams of making that leaping catch in the back of the end zone to win the game in its final seconds. How can you not? It's a spectacular display of athleticism and concentration. The pay isn't bad either. But for every quarterback who throws that perfect pass and every linebacker who comes off the edge for a crushing blind-side sack, there are dozens of other people whose career in sports is to make the game work. And not just the other players and the referees, either. Each NFL game has a small army of professionals working off the field to make sure that the game stays fair and runs smoothly so the folks at home with their beer and wings get the game they deserve. Who are these people? You'll never hear their names, but if you look closely, you may sometime catch a glimpse of them working in the background. These people have some of the coolest jobs you can score in the NFL without being able to run a 4.3 40-yard dash. Take a look at these behind-the-scenes jobs of the National Football League. Kicking Ball (K-Ball) Coordinator Did you know that the ball that kickers use for field goals, extra points, and kickoffs isn't the same as the regular game ball? The idea behind this is to regulate the balls to make sure that each kicker and punter uses an identical ball. Keeping footballs secure so they're not tampered with is a pretty big deal in the NFL, so this role as a watchful eye carries a lot of weight (12.5 to 13.5 pounds, to be exact). The K-Ball Coordinator (KBC) is essentially a guard for these precious game pieces. Once they are delivered to the field directly from Wilson, they are measured for PSI (pounds per square inch) and approved by the referee. At that point, the K-Ball Coordinator takes possession of the balls and watches over them until 10 minutes before game time. Then, the KBC delivers the balls to the replay station where they are distributed to each team under the careful watch of an NFL security rep. The coolest part about this National Football League job? Watching your team kick the game-winning field goal and feeling like you had just a little part in that. That was your ball. Job Qualifications: Impeccable integrity, responsibility, and no former scandals. Gameday Frequency Coordinator Just imagine: It's third down with eight yards to go at the end of a crucial game. The head coach sends his play to his quarterback via headset. The quarterback, however, doesn't get the play at all. Instead, he hears that Flight 782 out of Omaha has clearance to land. What? During an NFL game, there are many headsets, walkie-talkies, and other radio devices in use, and they all need open frequency channels to function correctly. On top of that, there can be interference from local radio stations, airports, and even concert venues. That's where the Gameday Frequency Coordinator comes in. This person's job is to assign frequencies to different parties throughout the game to make sure one isn't interfering with another. Sometimes it can be as tricky as two parties using the same frequency, but making sure they're on opposite ends of the stadium. When that quarterback has to burn a timeout because of Flight 782, you can bet the Gameday Frequency Coordinator will hear about it. If you're looking for jobs in the NFL where you can be on the sidelines helping out while watching the game, this isn't the one for you. For this role, you'll have to be on top of your frequencies at all times. The coolest part about this job? You might hear little snippets of everyone's conversation, including when the quarterback tells his coach What? That's a stupid play! Job Qualifications: Technical knowledge of radio frequencies, multi-tasking, and the ability to tell the difference between a coach's voice and a Beyonc concert. Related:LinkedIn Makeovers for NFL Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt Ryan Game Clock Operator This is the perfect job, right? Not only do you get to watch the game, you have to watch it! Well, you also have to know exactly when the game clock is supposed to start and when it needs to stop. The Game Clock Operator is just what it sounds like: It's a person who is responsible for the official game clock. In a game that can be won or lost in the final moments, this can be a stressful position to say the least. Every second counts, and while the officials are supposed to be keeping track of the clock as well, it's the Game Clock Operator's responsibility to take the helm and keep the clock moving or stopped as it should be. In 2015, a Game Clock Operator in San Diego started the game clock too early as the Steelers lined up for their final drive. The error cost the Steelers 18 seconds, and while they still made their last-second winning touchdown, one has to wonder if the Game Clock Operator was trying to give his team an edge. He was ultimately suspended for this error, so yeah, this job is no joke. But the coolest part about being a Game Clock Operator in the NFL? You know what all of those crazy arm motions and whistles from the referees really mean. It's like a secret language, and you can decode it! Job Qualifications: The ability to run a clock, attention to detail, and no favoritism! Uniform Inspector You think that business casual is a bit too strict these days? Try playing in the NFL! An NFL player's uniform is strictly regulated by the league. Socks must be white up to the mid-calf with only team-approved colors at that point, jerseys must be tucked in, bandanas are not allowed, and, most importantly, all pads must be worn. Who makes sure all of these rules are followed? The League Uniform Inspectors. 64 individuals take on this responsibility with two at each game to look over every player (and coach) to make sure regulations are met. Many of these rules are for safety, such as the pads requirement, but there are other reasons too. The NFL signs marketing contracts with brands like Reebok and New Era, which means that players who are showing off their favorite Nike hat or Adidas spikes are endangering the NFL's lucrative deals. The team will be quickly informed if the Uniform Inspector spots a violation, and the offender is then required to fix the issue during the next change of possession or risk not playing in the game and paying sizeable fines.
